When people say "Internet" the meaning is obvious as there is only one,
like God.

When people say 'intranet' - it could mean a LAN as amit says; it could
also mean a leased line WAN, a VPN(virtual private network), or even a
network hosting dialups.

what business people mean when they say 'intranet' is - a 'network',
like the Internet, but restricted to members of a single organization.

Since the word was coined by sales people the actual 'network' used
remained unspecified. The definition hinges on who is allowed access to
the network, not on the underlying technology (though usage of TCP/IP
may be assumed).

This becomes clear when we consider another marketing term coined
subsequent to 'intranet' - 'extranet' - means a network restricted to a
single organization as well as to those outside partners(like suppliers
and distributors) invited into the network. One can easily see that
technically there is NO difference between 'intranet' and 'extranet' -
just in who is allowed access.

when JOY says 'intranet' it is clear that he wants members of a single
org. to be allowed access - what is unclear is where the servers will be
located, whether the servers shared or dedicated, whether the servers
will be on the Internet or a private WAN or LAN network, how dispersed
the members are and how they will be accessing the servers.

I am still waiting to hear firm dates for the COMPASS fair. I had
promised to create a schedule of deadlines and responsibilities upon
getting confirmation of dates and venue.

That still holds. But, testing the wind tells me that enthusiasm for
the fair has abated.

I doubt the original volunteers are any longer willing as none but you
has expressed any interest or even mentioned the topic.

I think it safe to declare the effort as officially dead (saves me a lot
of futile effort)
     - unless I am surprised by overwhelming denials to this mail! ;)
