Going through the GNU license it appears to me that you can charge for the
code too.

So I read http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition_plain.php

Is this the offending clause ?

"9. The License Must Not Restrict Other Software
The license must not place restrictions on other software that is
distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license
must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium
must be open-source software"

Wouldn't that mean open source is "more free" than free
software by allowing all sorts of things  (shareware, freeware,
studentware, noncommercialware etc. etc.) on board ?

Is the aim of free software something like communism ? Software is
probably a much better place to implement communism than in the "real
world" of material (physical) goods. But it wouldn't be sensible to expect
laws that prohibit closed source code would it? Infact in certain niche
markets this would mean an underground economy of closed source
programs...
