I run ext3fs - if I need to do a dirty reboot, the boot time is far better
than ext2fs, since I have 2 30G HDD's. So the fsck stage is skipped.

As for data loss, I've had to reboot a number of times and have never lost
data (but even then I do have my backups :)

I'd think that for a desktop system, where an unknowledgable or lazy user
might simply power off the machine rather than going through a controlled
shutdown, a journalling FS would be a good thing to have - if nothing else,
the chances of data loss are reduced compared to a non journalled FS.

If I understand your question, ReiserFS is an alternative filesystem. You can
partition a drive and format it with ReiserFS rather than ext3fs or ext2fs.
Of course there are other journaling filesystems (XFS from SGI, JFS from
IBM).

The second link is the first part of a very nice series of articles on file
systems.

A: Nothing. You can't cross a vector with a scaler.
