I think you are using NIS. RH7.2 has problem with NIS. Update with
patch from Redhat.
U can try following --

Stop ypbind (/etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind stop).  
Change password.  
Start ypbind (/etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind stop).
