thanks a lot. my problem solved. In my earlier mails i forgot to mention that i am using RH 7.2 with NIS.
In NIS to change password it is "yppasswd" and not "passwd".

I think you are using NIS. RH7.2 has problem with NIS. Update with
patch from Redhat.
U can try following --
Stop ypbind (/etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind stop).
Change password.
Start ypbind (/etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind stop).
