I did fiddle around with this a long while ago (there
should be a copy of my howto on the ilug cal website
somewhere). 
So, your mileage may vary depending on your modem. You
should be using a good headset to get around the
volume and line noise issues. I had a fairly good
headset that had a built in volume control. As far as
I remember the volume commands were documented in the
AT set, but I was unable to modify my modem's internal
volume.
