Hi,

Pixar Animation Studios (NASDAQ: PIXR) who brought the world "Monsters Inc" and "Toy
Story" is switching from SUN
Microsystem to Intel. [1]

The Emeryville, Calif.-based film studio is replacing servers from Sun in its render
farm--a bank of servers that fuses
artists' images into finished film frames--with eight new blade servers from Racksaver
(http://www.racksaver.com/). In
all, the blade system contains 1,024 Intel 2.8GHz Xeon processors, and it runs the
open-source Linux operating system.

Pixar installed the Rackspace system over the previous six months, along with porting
its Renderman software to Linux
will be using it to develop its next film, The Incredibles, which will likely hit
theaters in 2004.

For Pixar this is a complete migration to Intel/Linux platform, as it moves away from
RISC-based SUN Microsystems
server. In doing so, PIXAR joins the ranks of other leading animation/movie studios in
Hollywood like -- Industrial
Lights & Magic[2], DreamWorks [3] and Sony Pictures' Imageworks, all of whom have
shifted or gradually migrating to
Linux Operating system
