hiya,
I've pottered around and I have a rough idea of the issue now,

I needed to load the sound module (insmod sound)
I needed to disable arts from kde via the control panel
I needed to change the permission for /dev/dsp by chmod a+rw /dev/dsp

And that works at least on this boot up.
I checked /etc/modules/conf and it appeared all was kosher (according to
some webpages I readup)

the error that I was getting before was

/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
sound server will continue using null device
(for root)

and as root I could play stuff fine.

I like the antialiasing on rh8.0, it makes stuff look much softer and more
pleasant that what I had with KDE2 on SuSE 7.3
