thanks for pointer on .xsession-errors. That helped !
So I get

sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': No such device

my /dev/dsp permissions are

crw-rw-rw-    1 kghose   root      14,   3 Aug 30  2002 /dev/dsp

my current user is kghose
