i don't think your examples are appropriate in this context. how deaf
people choose to communicate among themselves affects no one but
themselves. public opinion is not a considration here. but computing is
a much more pervasive activity that touches everyone, directly or
indirectly. social activism in the latter field is relevant and
understandable, but not in the former. for example, a personal choice to
use buggy software does not remain so personal when it is exploited to
launch worldwide DoS attacks.
and why does the question of forcing the use of free software arise at
all? i proposed that we opt for free formats. people who wanted to use
oue slides should respect our choice. that is all i said, yet suffered
comparisons with microsoft. as far as i can see, my proposed strategy
has nothing to do with M$'s coercive tactics in intent, degree or
method.
