To toggle between graphical and text modes press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 to go to text mode and to return to graphic mode again press Ctrl+Alt+F7. You need to press ctrl, alt and the function switch together to achieve it. You can use both your hands, otherwise it is difficult :)- One more thing: You can use only the left Ctrl and Alt switches and not the right ones. About your GNOME problem, I can't help as I never faced such a problem. But you can definitely go for a reinstall of the GNOME Package if nothing works. But before you do that wait for other's advice. Haven't you installed KDE. While GNOME is not working you can load KDE and do your job. I personally use KDE tho' GNOME is also cool. One more thing: I personally would like everyone to be friends in this group. You don't need 'yours faithfully' here. Even tata would do.
