This is a common problem with RH sendmail based systems. This means that your reverse DNS for your system is not configured properly. As a workaround you can try renaming /etc/resolv.conf to something else and this should solve your problem. But, then you need /etc/resolv.conf, if you surf the net. So, to remove sendmail from startup, use chkconfig.
"man chkconfig" should help you out here.

I've found that renaming /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail to say Sendmail works, and nothing more needs to be changed.
