info grub says that error 17 means

"Cannot mount selected partition
     This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the
     filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB."

 Can you send the grub.conf file? I think you haven't put the initrd part in 
your grub.conf. This may happen if you are using reiserfs or xfs or jfs as your 
filesystem and not loading the initrd before the booting starts.
