Taking advantage of Linux and readily available WLAN PCI cards
(3-4K rupees) and making an antenna on own can give a good oppurtunity to
students (of communications and electronics and radio physics) to
experiment
with the subject and also provide an option of setting up the entire
infrastructure very cheaply and with home grown knowledge.

sound interesting .. some members can volunteer to get together and do this
.. i'm 'in' .. i guess jp mathews will be ok too .. and saugata has good
skills with things mechanical .. we already have an embedded linux guy
(soumya ?) in this group ..

ashwin's place is very central .. gariahat crossing .. maybe we can get
together and try out things in a nearby place (?) .. and report results here

I have a couple of omni antennas (outdoor antennas) with cables and connectors.

I need some wide open space (terrace tops) which can offer clear LOS between two points at different ranges (100 meters, 200 meters, 300 meters and 400 meters) and we can do some interesting experiments on signal levels and ranges.

My central location does not allow me to do such experiments.

If there is interest, I can write more on the scope of work (hardware, power, PC, laptop involved) to carry out some experiments as above in next ilug-cal meet.

with Regards,
ASHWIN
