I suggest all such places like WBUT and other Tech colleges should setup
Wireless Access Points (make one with Orinoco PCI card and Linux box)
including finding ways to cover college hostel and campus which will benefit
more than one individual.

Too juicy not to make a comment... at WBUT testing has already been done for a WiFi n/w... the hardware is already in place, but I have no idea when it will be opened and for whose use... 1st year students' lugging laptop isn't yet a very common thing ;-)

It is only a matter of time and thought before Universities will start having a tie up with Laptop vendors to provide Laptops to students at such rates and schemes which a user (student) can pay for (as part of his fees) during his stay in the university. Such practices are very common in universities outside India, even in places like Singapore, Hongkong to name a few from ASIA. An entry level PC is now affordable for students anyway.

Now coming back to the question of WLAN.... The cost of hardware that one invests in by buying a complete branded solution from a vendor is too expensive. Taking advantage of Linux and readily available WLAN PCI cards (3-4K rupees) and making an antenna on own can give a good oppurtunity to students (of communications and electronics and radio physics) to experiment with the subject and also provide an option of setting up the entire infrastructure very cheaply and with home grown knowledge.
