Thanks for your suggestions. Now I am using OpenOffice
for last few days.
I don't have much problem apart from writing bengali.
Can you please clarify me how to install and use
fonts? The bengali fonts I have are not working here.
And the front progoty how can I get the lay-out?

Another question. As a part of my work I have to
interview people and occassionally I use a sony
tape-recorder. Is there any way to convert the audio
in text output and to reformat it ( inserting
pictures, tables, etc.)?

And about statistical packages, I am giving below the
softwares which my colleagues use
1. Limdep
2. SPSS
3. Microfit
4. E-views
5. Shazam
6. STATA
Can you suggest the replacements?
It will be nice if you can suggest alternatives (free)
of TSP and SAS, as we can't affoard these. Better if
you can categorise the alternatives like Time series,
Cross section,panel data (qualitative/quantitative).

Last one for this time. If we categorise the responses
according to spatial distribution how can we do that
using maps and PRM excercise? Let me break up. Say, we
are interviewing people regarding migration. The
responses are of different types, viz. land
fragmentation, drought and flood, riots so many. Now
these different groups of people from different places
are coming together to develop a new settlement and a
new socio-cultural dynamics. We want to present this
thing in visual way. One of us had use a GIS package
for one year, but that was very clarical job and
costly too. Is there any alternative in Linux
environment? It would be preferable if the people can
participate in the whole thing after a minimum
demonstration, like the can identify their para, where
they live, click it and get some questions to fill-up,
in both ways, marking it or entering some text and
numbers, and the same thing for the places from where
they hav come. Now from these entries some sort of
tables can be generated which will be the inputs of
those statistical packages.
Perhaps we need to mention our work. It does not have
any relation with my profession. We are a group of
friends working in development sector, for that reason
we do have some access to these data and we want to
make these on our own. As our monthly average income
is around 4000, we can't affoard all those costly
softwares, and the net neither.
We are no technical person. So please reply in a way
that we can understand.
Already, it is more than 15 minutes. So, I have to
finish it.
>From our part we just want to be clear whether it is
very ambitious to plan to develop this sort of thing
on our own under your guidence? We don't know whether
this is OT or not, if so please pardon us. And Ashwin,
P.K to all of the thread regarding internet
connection, we could not follw much of the discussion,
but has it something to do to network distant places?
If so, can we contact you off-list?

Thanks,
sandip, kunal, indranil and bhatu.
