I hardly ever hit the reply button to any emails these days, but I just
couldnt resist this time round. I'll copy paste shamelessly from Sid's ILUG
Howto, which says
"the local ILUG must provide some of the same functions that a ``regional
office'' provides for large computer corporations like IBM, Microsoft, or
Sun. ILUGs can and must train, support, and educate Linux users, coordinate
Linux consultants, advocate Linux as a computing solution, and even serve as
a liason to local media outlets like newspapers and television."

core set of goals for a local
  ILUG:

  o advocacy

  o education

  o support

  o socializing

Now I understand that an event like Compass allows us to serve the 1st 2
goals, but I wonder how worthwhile it is, to go through the pain of acheiving
the 1st two objectives, if the last two arent realised in the same manner.
Its like telling me that there is a great picnic spot to go to, but that I
cant be provided with directions to reach the place and I almost certainly
cant take anyone along for the picnic.

I would be thrilled if the LUG does participate in Compass, but I think we as
a LUG need to socialize and meet more often than we do. And this initiative
needs to come from all of us. There would be a time when an Arijit-da or an
Indra-da or a Saugata-da or a Soumyadip would tire of doing the hard work of
getting a meet organised. Thats when someone else should step up and take up
the mantle and get the job done. We dont need fancy equipment like a
projector to have a meet in place. All we do need really is a PC that runs
Linux and a bunch of nerds to make the day....

Just my 2p
