You state that you are using Fedora Core 3 - which would make it a
trifle simpler. Just ensure that you have the Indic fonts installed,
IIIMF installed, boot into the Hindi locale/language, fire up gedit and
use Ctrl+Space to switch between languages and F6 (the Function key 6)
to switch between keyboards (multiple keyboards are available for a
language). If you want to switch between multiple Indic languages use F5
to cycle between language.

The keyboard context is relevant to the active window/instance. If you
open another instance/tab of gedit, you will revert to the default
language (normally chosen as English)

It is more pertinent to ask whether the rendering of all the Hindi
glyphs/characters would be absolutely perfect in OO.o. I am not aware of
the current status, so you would have to do some testing.
