If a particular damaged sector of your vcd is the culprit, then it seems from your observation that it is also intolerable for mplayer to play. Now to confirm the problem, you could try Kaffeine(suggested by previous poster) or xine-media-player which is based on xinelib(different from underlying lib of mplayer) and see if you could replicate it.
By the way what version of mplayer you are running.
