Hi,
kernel compilation may sound tough, but its the best fragrance linux has..
for a howto on how to compile your own little kernel refer

once you are starting to compile...let me remind you that 
within File Systems -> select the ntfs file system as a built in to kernel and 
you will achieve what you are trying..

be carefull allthough.. on rh8, there are quirks... so here is some safety 
advise
#1) have a bootable floppy of your linux..
#2) back up old kernel and the modules directory and the source headers
