I do not have first hand experience with Mandriva, but if you have never tried any distro of linux at all before, try Ubuntu Linux to start with. You can order a copy of Ubuntu linux for free over the web (www.ubuntulinux.org or shipit.ubuntu.com), but I am sure many ilug-cal members will be able to help you with their CDs.
Also, try CDs distributed with the magazine "Linux For You"/PCQuest/Digit, etc.... Some of them are live CDs, so you can actually experience for yourself how things work before you decide on a specific distro.
