"Indian engineers good only at theory: Microsoft" is an interesting report which may be read at http://in.rediff.com/money/2005/oct/07ms.htm
We are good at two things - 1. Working for others 2. Fighting amongst ourselves
In it, Microsoft Corporation's Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie observes, among other things, that "There are so few Indian software companies developing local software. That is a negative reinforcement, because there is no local software and no new applications". Hit the nail on the head there, Mundie did, IMO!
A few years ago, I raised the issue of creating software available in local language, so that people at rural/semi-urban back ground can make use of computer. I was ridiculed and called anti-national, looking backwards and what not. But I know, my colleagues from Korea refuses to use any language other Korean for their work. I don't think they are particularly backward in any way compared to us Indians.
Indian software development will only come when we have sufficient vernacular option so that computer is useful for Indian masses.
