This may interest kernel enthusiasts in ilug-cal
I had been reading through the documentation for Xen Virtualization
and how this technology is going to be used by Intel VT and AMD
Pacifica processors. A friend of mine who is now in XenSource came
recently and gave me a CD with which I experimented with the demo of
running a freebsd and debian OS under XEN on the same processor. The
technology is complex, specially the way the processor and hypervisor
handles the Virtual Memory and common disk resource. But this seems to
be the only way the new processors could be marketed by large
companies like IBM, HP and Dell to create "on-demand" services.
If there are enough enthusiasts in Kolkata and nearby, I would like to
create a resource pool that could be shared by all of us.
Since XEN supports snapshot, save and restore, it has a capability to
relocate a running application with its OS on to another processor. I
would like to find out if this could be achieved to the benfit of SMEs
who could simply add a few (old) Pentium boxes to migrate applications
from a overcrowded 64 bit central server.
Appreciate your views.
Thanks
