Yes, it is really worth a try!!! It's actually very good. on my system(PIII 
550, 128MB ram) it boots in approx 20secs(!!!). besides, if you have sources, 
you can run all your favourite GNU/Linux programs on it. it also has a linux 
binary compatibility mode, but it's not that robust. It comes complete with 
GNOME, so if you're a GUI kind of guy, you'll be right at home. For my, ie non 
gui, type there is almost all the tools youre used to etc. FreeBSD comes with a 
nice set of manuals to guide u thru the customization process( you have to 
manually configure the system to load the sound card driver at boot (at least 
in FreeBSD 5.2);-), but it's very easy). It's also supposed to be very secure.
besides, if you know the history of UNIX, BSD is one of the pioneers of *NIX 
standardization . 
so, don't think twice, go ahead and try it out.
