hmmm, I like a discussion ;) Yahoo uses BSD, so there must be something good about it. On the other hand, google uses linux so they must have found something equally compelling about it :) IMO, in the end, it boils down to what one is confortable with. There was a time when FreeBSD was a better alternative because of the increased hardware support and support for better *server* type features, smp and the like. But that is no longer the case. Linux support for enterprise hardware has grown by leaps and bounds with the 2.4 and now 2.6 kernels. NUMA, smp and other buzzowords all have support under linux. smp finally works like it should, though some might still not agree with me. But, I believe, linux's time has come !! < i can hear trumpets in the background :) > The various BSDs have always been particularly strong in the areas of security and data integrity. chroot jails, ACLs and good firewalls have been their forte. But linux has all that now. Academically, its still cooler to run a bsd system than a linux cause almost everyone is running the latter these days ;) -- Sharninder -- Sharninder http://sharninder.blogspot.com __________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - Make it your home page! http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
