In my last mail, if Dipankar is refers to GUI's from MS as imposed on

So is Linux going the wrong way with the inclusion of GUI's in the
distro's?

I am trying to be more linux specific.

To be more relevant, let us just aside MS i.e. what MS does or does not is not important.

For a wee bit of time let us look at the issue with OSS and Linux in mind.

Linux is a platform which satisfies the computing needs of a many varied users. Right from students, enthusiasts, developers, designers, desktop users, real time systems, database designer / users, network planners / users / designer, data warehousing, web services - the list can go on and on........

In such a situation CLI or GUI or both is / are needed depending on the pattern of usage of every individual.

Now the question is does LINUX cater to such varied needs. Does Linux offer mutliple options on GUI (i.e. different X-windows systems, various desktops of choice - gnome, kde...., more than one IDE) as well as CLI (i.e. bash, csh, ksh... shells, scripting ability....perl, python to name a few and tools grep, sort, watch.......... and such options).

IMO, the answer is yes, that is LINUX does provide a wide variety of choices to every user. Infact, there is so much to choose from (both from available GUI and CLI options) that one sometimes has to think what to try / choose / leave.

I feel where, there are multiple choices / options to make (that too completely free) there does not exist even the notions of "enslavement", "colonization", "sublime force" etc......

Finally, consider an example VIDEO editing on Linux. Very much possible, doable comfortably. Can it be done without GUI ? The answer if a flat NO. The applications driven by Graphics do need GUI. Now one more choice, format conversion of video files. Is the more flexible and powerful CLI interface available for the same in Linux ? Yes. There you see the user is empowered and independent to make choices.

Now one can compare the above situation with MS and find the answers himself / herself :)

with Regards,
ASHWIN
