Hi Surendra,

I moved to Cal last year and my experience has been identical to
yours. And to the ILUG-Cal old timers, your email must be like "deja
vu all over again". :-) And like them, I am supportive of all efforts
to make this group more active.

The good news is that there are a number of potentially active members
here who are lying dormant at the moment, perhaps because as a group
we haven't reached critical mass yet. I hope efforts like yours will
draw more people to the active group.

Welcome to the LUG.

Sorry for non-bengali speaking members. Sooner U understand the true meaning of this the better it is for U.

Hello everyone,
I just recently moved to Calcutta, and was excited when I found the
India Linux Users Group Calcutta website by google search, but my
excitement soon fizzled out after I realized that this group has been
lying dormant for quite some time.

I propose that we should have monthly LUG meetings. Having a vibrant
Linux user community and regular meetings will not only help in
spreading the open source movement, but also it will provide an
opportunity to socialize and learn new things.

To keep the LUG meetings interesting and useful for the community, I
think the meetings should coincide with some of the following
activities:

1. Linux Install Fests - Help newbies troubleshoot and install Linux on
their laptops and desktops. Also, show them some Linux equivalent of
things in windows.

2. Promotional Events - Spread awareness about Linux in schools and
colleges. Make presentations, remove myths and FUD.

3. Hacking - Get together and hack on your favorite open source project
for some time (may require that participants have laptop).

4. Technologies - We can have people giving presentations on different
technologies, e.g. virtualization and xen, ruby on rails, Haskell and
type checking, continuations, data mining, etc. (feel free to add your
fav. topic).

I have had some personal communication (through emails) with some of the
old timers in Cal-LUG and they have been very supportive of this
initiative.
I hope to hear your response and views on the entire idea of LUG
meetings, and also things which you would like and not like to see.

Cheers.
