It is not matlab or signal processing  alone. there are several
other  courses  that specify proprietary software.  For example,  CUSAT
specifies MASM and debug. :D
See the syllabus of Microprocessor laboratory attached below.
Now wonder several  our students (and almost all our professors)  are still
in DOS era.

  The syllabus was revised in 2006.  We may have the next revision in
another 5 years.  Let me hope that we will be able to run debug  until then.
