generally, ntfs partitions are mounted read only or as far as possible not
written into from linux for fear of corruption. pls check your /etc/fstab
for mount detail, as root, fdisk -l will also list partitions on the hard
disk which could lead to the diagnosis of the problem. I am a debian fan,
but has used mandriva - mcc (mandrake control centre) should have provision
to format and mount partitions which on request is added to the fstab
if you did not succeed, pls send me output of fdisk -l and fstab also tell
me the version of mandriva
