which version of eclipse are you using?
use this in your eclipse.ini which resides in your eclipse install
folder(where eclipse executable resides)
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
eclipse will use some 100-180 MB  memory depending upon the kind of
plugins you have loaded.. so if you dont have enough memory it will
hang often.
if you dont need   plugins  like j2ee plugin, EMF, etc,disable them.

options is available in Help>Software Updates,  you can see a tree.
from that select plugins that you dont need and right click and then
select disable.
restart when your are done.

Eclipse is the best IDE I have ever used, (I 've been using it for years ).
