*Proceedings:*
Meeting called to order at 03.00pm
*Agenda Items:*
0. Review what we have done till now
1. Discuss preliminary steps for making a curriculum
2. Discussion on whether we need a free-software replacement or a new
way of teaching
3. How to prepare a syllabus and who all should involve?
*Key Points:*
The meeting started around 3.30 the quorum was present by then, Vimal
gave a review on the objective of the meeting and the things we have done to
date. Thomas mani sir gave a full sketch on the requirements and even
threats they are facing from proprietary companies, He told that Adobe has
send a formal letter to the school, demanding the purchase of there suite
which includes 10 machine license rated at Rs-3 lakh/per year.
The second concern facing was on the syllabus content vs the ability of
the student. Arun had a talk on how the new books available in market are
full of new application software which nothing else but a page fillers. He
also added that the publishing companies are actually targeting the parents
and the school authorities with new tech terms included in there books
rather than focusing on whether the students can grasp it or use those
application when he grows up.
Thomas Mani sir added that the parents needed a book for teaching there
children, and once an incident occurred as the current first standard
syllabus consists of games, the parents complain why is it done so? the
parents perspective view is, I`m paying such a fee to his institution not to
teach my child how to play computer games. Even once a parent came with a
grade card issued by another leading school for first std. He also added the
social pressure is even making the things harder.
V.Sasi Kumar sir was in the opinion of not to pump in a lot of content to
a syllabus, that a student cant grasp. Also the computers should be taught
as he/she playes with a toy.
Mr Arun read out the current syllabus based on free-software, every one
replied with different opinions. Thomas mani sir told that they are going to
use this syllabus for State/CBSE/ICSE schools. Things that should be kept in
mind is, 10th std syllabus for ICSE contains JAVA programming. so the
syllabus should be framed such that the student of an ICSE school should be
able to reach that level by then, in short the syllabus should not be a
loose one. The syllabus structure should be such that till 7th every one has
the same syllabus. For 8,9,and 10 ICSE and state has its own syllabus so we
need syllabus for CBSE.
VK Sasidharan sir and Sathyapalan sir stated that making a curriculum is
not a simple job it requires man power and lots of effort. i...@school had a
team of 40 teachers for making the syllabus. With the current attended
strength of Ilug volunteers its not possible. He also suggested using the
available resources in the school. In these secnario making a syllabus and
giving it in the full printable form is not feasible unless theres more
volunteers from both sides. That will also generate an ownership from the
schools side too. Thomas mani sir told that he can arrange about 4 teachers
from the schools side.
The meeting was concluded by arranging the next meeting on MAY-9 @ the
school with the audience being the school teachers of diffrenent subjects.
Which will be dealing with Interdisciplinary - Integration and IT enabled
Education. A presentation of available educational software will also be
done to show the reach and use of implenting an IT enabled education.
*Assessment of the Meeting:*
1. Identify what a student can do in each class
2. How the ideas can help a student in his/her studies
3. Make lesson frames
4. Divide theory and Lab
5. Refer math, science, social science books for topics which can be refered
