Via graphics chipset are known to have problems with Karmic. But the problem I've got on a that system was something differrent. After installation I got nothing but some coloured lines on the screen. I've fixed this with safe graphics mode as in the last post. I have googled at that time and found many similar problems. @Vimal Are you using a via chipset system...?
