>From your post what I guess is that, mounting disks via GUI fails because of unclean working of the by-booting O.S (Windows). You must shutdown Windows tidily. If you are unable to do that, you can forcefully mount the drives. Read 'man mount' : And If he needs a complete GNU/Linux machine, (since his CD drive is problematic) try using 'unetbootin' or 'usb-creator' (for debian based system) to make a bootable USB drive.
