installing and running java is as simple as that,
Please verify if you have correctly installed it. The bin file
downloaded from sun's site,  when executed,   will create a jdk folder
and put all the files in it.
All you have to do is to put the jdk path in PATH env variable.
I have added this line in .bashrc which lies in my home folder
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/jdk1.5.0_16/bin
