Its not like that(at least in my opinion), its very user friendly( i've been using it for the last 5.5 years). it has a huge repository of plugins. ( you may write one on your own too, thats is also simple and easy). Only think is that it sucks so much memory. For academic purpose , students should stick to a text editor which is the best way to learn java.(if curriculam allows the use of an IDE, then there is not much of a problem)
