well ps2 interface is not hotplug capable so you have to connect the devices prior to booting up the system while usb is hotplug compliant. i've installed ubuntu 9.04 using ps2 keyboard without any problem. as for problem with the laptop installation it might be maker/ model specific issue. since all touchpad devices use ps2 interface and insofar i have never come across any problem installing ubuntu to laptop(i've done it on sony, hp, dell and lenovo systems, the last one is my own system)
