Hi,

So which CAD software to use is very much dependent on the use case. A
large proportion of engineers do not care for 3D CAD software, since
its too difficult and the advantages are minimal.

Smaller firms or individual consultants in typical engineering fields
prefer to use 2D CAD as it helps them to produce something very
similar to a 2D drawing, e.g., what we might do in Engineering Drawing
class - drawing on a large sheet with various pencils and drawing
equipment. Typically, these 2D drawings are not shared digitally,
instead they are plotted/printed and shared with fabricators,
machinists, field engineers, contractors, managers, etc. The most
important point is: they want to do digitally, what they might do on a
piece of paper.

As an analogy, 3D vs 2D is something like DTP tool vs a Word Processor.
