Ubuntu does work on most laptops out of the box. You may not be able to get some manufacturer specific features to work , like the hot keys. Even if you buy a Linux friendly laptop, there can be problems later on when you try to add additional hardware (in your case mouse) If you are not comfortable with playing around your system, best option will be to buy hardware with linux drivers readily available. Dell /HP got their own ubuntu pre-installed laptops which costs less than their windows counterpart as OS is free. -- "Freedom is the only law".
