The first line indent is used in some classical formats and sometimes dense technical documentation. Modern/contemporary styles sometimes do not use first-line indents.
These kind of things are called Style Guide. One famous style guide used by people is the Chicago Manual of Style or Chicago Style Guide. Your university or organization might have its own Style Guide (sometimes prescribed by bodies like IEEE).
