since you are not interested in gaming you can go with integrated Intel based models. the lenovo model i earlier said can be had with windows 7 installed also. the price will increase to 36k. in the dell's range inspiron 15R can be had for around 42K (Core i5 2.5 Ghz sandybridge CPU, 4GB ram, 500GB HDD and a pretty decent 15" screen which is sufficient for movie watching etc). also this model can be expected to have one RAM slot free since it uses 1 x 4GB configuration hence you can upgrade your RAM buy spending some extra. 17" variants of dell cost above 50k and uses optimus tech further they will be heavy as hell and cannot be used if you daily commute with laptop. same applies for similar models from HP, Toshiba etc .
all my above opinions are mainly based on the fact that you dont want exceed your budget of 45K Battery backup will be pretty decent in linux. however newer versions of major distros are affected by bug in linux kernel that causes some serious power drain. however its being closely being studied and fix is expected to be out soon. since its a high priority bug within ubuntu we can expect them port the patchfix as an when its available from upstream back to the existing releases slim, light weight and performance doesn't go together in personal computing unless you are ready to pay the premium(case in point Vaio Z, lighter than Macbook air but faster than most of Macbook Pros, but damn costly 100k+ minimum [?]). weight wise most of the aforesaid models fall in range of 2.6kg, typical market average for any 15" laptops in this price range ok now to the brand preference/reliability part. is your friends statements regarding brand reliabilty based on hard proof or some distant anecdotal evidence. personally i own a Lenovo system(2 year old Ideapad Y550) and its working just fine. some time i use it run bioinformatics softwares and it copes without a hitch. only trouble i had it with is a dislocated hinge caused by me banging it on door accidentally and it was readily fixed under warranty. Dells are also fine machines however off late some dell machines (XPS line to be specific) i have seen have shoddy worksmanship. a few of the had to have their RAM modules reseated since they were not fixed properly in the first place causing the system to not boot, it might as be bad luck of the buyer as well. Historically Toshiba and lenovo had very good reliability rating. if you read reviews in anandtech, tomshardware you can hear people swearing by those brands. the following link is a study of reliablity of major laptop brands, its two year old one. as with any kind of such market study take it with a little grain of salt [?] http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf if you have personally seen dell or any other brand for that matter working fine you can always go with. after all its finally your decision that counts [?]. with dell one thing i really like most is that they bundle basic hardware diagnostic tools along with all models which can help a lot in troubleshooting also their hard drive partitioning scheme is the most easiest to manipulate with in order to install linux, HP is worse in that aspect(all 4 primary parttions being assigned, with last one used as recovery) On Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 2:18 PM, alan alan <[email protected]> wrote: > Thanks for the detailed reply bipin. > > I am not really into gaming.
