It was not an OS vulnerability, it was in the JAVA Run Time environment... So basically a virus was with in a vulnerable version of java, which could have permission to access or run in the background.
I think such a vulnerability exist even in linux system, for example even servers run on linux can be hacked through a PHP website it is hosting.
