I do this:

1. Scan using Kooka
2. Open it in Gimp
3. Play with Color -> Levels and Color -> Curves so that I get a
histogram that has peaks near Zero and 255 (two highs at both the
extremes). Sometimes, I play with contrast as well.
4. Print.
