I disagree, experience is not just time put in foobar company.  A truly 
motivated person would keep learning open source on his/her own time 
and raise the bar of his/her knowledge.  Many open source contributors 
have regular jobs. This is also experience and I would definitely 
consider such a person for job openings.  In fact, I have recruited 
persons who exhibited a fairly good understanding of Linux even though 
they did not have any degree or experience.
