Well, there's not much I can do if you consider it preaching - I have
clearly told you why I thought that sort of replying is unhelpful. If
you think it is indeed informative, you are obviously free to continue
doing so.

I agree. I could have suggested a few variants of my own. But I didn't
have enough information to suggest him something else that would help
him. He didn't express any need for 'alternative' solutions either. If
the common solution is going to be enough for him, why make him go
through the trouble of special cases?
If indeed I thought that I have something to contribute that is unkown
or normally ignored, I would at least give him clear reasons why it is
better than the most common alternative. All I'm saying is you have to
make a case as to why you think your solution is better, since you're
suggesting something different than others.
