A lot has already been written about "Canonical's contributions or lack thereof" and I don't think I want to add to this. However, your question could also be seen as: "Should I switch from Ubuntu?" The choice of distribution should not be made lightly but it is far from permanent. At the same time, installing a new distribution every few weeks or even months is not my idea of fun. So having chosen your distribution work on it and with the community for a while. Make a contribution which feels like a milestone has been achieved. You can then re-examine your decision in the light of experience.
