I am not sure if this will help. But here goes.
Use tilda. It is very useful for Gnome. KDE has yakuake. It can be
hidden(and brought back up) with a single key. Say F11. One more think I
used to do was have a gnome terminal running Full screen on one of the 4
desktops that come by default and multiplex it with screen. So I have 3 GUI
desktops and 1 CLI. You can increase the number of desktops as needed
