No, they don't do that...

What usually happens with proprietary software is that they put out a
lot of marketing material and a manual that nobody reads, the damn
thing doesn't perform to expectations,there's a helpless help line,
and people end up asking their neighbourhood geek anyway. The only
difference is the price placebo - after paying so much (or
alternatively, pirating it and feeling satisfied about *not* paying so
much), you feel that it's so much better than something that's free...

Of course, there are exceptions to that rule (some of Apple's
software, for example - damn easy to understand, if nothing else), but
I find that to be the most common scenario.
