JFTR, I have been suspending to RAM (while leaving a laptop connected to power supply most of the time) with no problems whatsoever, ever since kernel 2.6.27. It's much, much quicker than suspend to disk, though it does draw a tiny bit of battery if you don't connect the power supply.
