When you say "staying inside Linux" what exactly do you mean by that?  
Where are you trying to copy the file?

Don't blame Linux for your problems.  I have no problems copying > 8GB 
files on ext3, reiserfs, xfs file systems.

Do you have more than 4GB disk space in your file system?  Give output 
of "df -hT" and "ulimit"
