Actually this solved the problem. I just replaced all eth0 with ppp0 in my previous commands. And it started working. I had to make the LAN interface as trusted device in the gateway machine though. For some strange reason "Trusted devices" option has been disappeared from "System -> Administration -> Security Level and Firewall" in CentOS 5. Fortunately this particular option was available in the text mode equivalent (system-config-securitylevel-tui). I can now connect to Internet from my laptop with other regular firewalls being enabled. Thank you very much for your help. -- S.
